Name
Health Care Sharing Ministries (HCSMs): How Religion is Weaponized to Defraud Consumers
Date & Time
Monday, April 7, 2025, 10:15 AM - 11:15 AM

Description

Healthcare sharing ministries (HCSMs) are religious organizations that resemble health insurance, but unlike health insurance, are not required to pay medical claims. HCSM contracts are based in religious doctrines that are opposed to reproductive healthcare and LGBTQ+ rights; their contracts exclude abortion, birth control, and gender-affirming services. They also exclude pre-existing conditions and include waiting periods. This year, the Center for Freethought Equality is working with legislators in Vermont, Oregon, and other states on transparency legislation to protect consumers. Learn more about HCSMs and model laws already being implemented that legislators and advocates can consider in their respective states.
