Name
Bias and the Bench: How Religious Beliefs May Shape Supreme Court Abortion Decisions
Date & Time
Sunday, April 6, 2025, 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Lindsay Sabadosa
Description

This presentation examines the way bias, including religious beliefs, plays a role in abortion-related decisions in the Supreme Court. Focusing on fetal personhood, we will sample court cases to track the history and rhetoric of conservative Christian beliefs within the US legal system. Given that 7 of the 9 justices are or were raised Catholic, we will then survey recent changes in church teachings on abortion and ensoulment. The presentation will culminate in a conversation about the ways to stop the movement to enshrine fetal personhood into law using religious and secular arguments.
